Cathy Reid - Musical Director - No.2 Band

Cathy commenced playing cornet at the age of twelve in the Sutherland Shire junior band, NSW in 1981 and quickly progressed to Principal Tenor Horn in the senior A Grade Band.

During this time she won numerous solo titles including the City Of Sydney Eisteddfod and the NSW Open Flugel Horn Championship. Cathy also toured with the NSW Youth Band as Principal Tenor Horn completing solo recordings at the ABC studios Sydney for both radio and CD.

Under the coaching of Frank McGuinness (OAM), Cathy was awarded State Distinctions in AMEB Grade 6 theory and Grade 8 tenor horn.

She spent a short time at the 2nd Military

District Army Band in Sydney before studying architecture at Sydney University in 1987-89.

During this time Cathy played with the Sydney University Orchestra on trumpet under the direction of Professor Nicholas Routley, trialling original master works by resident composer Emeritus Professor Peter Sculthorpe (OBE AO).

Cathy also sang with the Sydney University Choir on alto under the direction of renowned brass band composer Professor Eric Gross (OAM).

She also successfully directed and choreographed three Sydney University Departmental Musicals from 1988-90.


Upon relocating to Brisbane in 1991 Cathy played flugel with the Brisbane Excelsior performing many solos and winning numerous state and regional solo titles. Cathy was Drum Major for Brisbane Excelsior and Windsor Brass at numerous contests and parades. In 2004, whilst played flugel with Windsor Brass Cathy also toured with Brisbane Excelsior to Hong Kong.

Cathy has been establishing and directing junior bands and multi-ensembles since 1987, including the Pan Pacific Music Camps Sydney, Dunwich State School Junior Wind Band, St. James Church Coorparoo Youth Ensemble and Choir, and the Windsor Academy Of Brass (Brisbane Excelsior's No.3 band).

Cathy began directing Sunnybank Brass No.2 and No.3 bands in 2008 successfully taking the No.2 band to three Queensland State Championships with placings in the D-Grade band events and numerous wins and placings in the Junior Solo and Ensemble events.

The band also won D Grade at the Maroochydore Festival Of Brass in 2010.


 


Cathy has been the inspiration in establishing and organising Youth Band camps at Sunnybank Brass, an annual event held for the last four years and also for the Solo and Party Eisteddfods that have been such a success over the last three years.

Cathy is currently coached by her inspirational brass band father-in-law, Trevor Reid OAM , former conductor of the Burnie Citizen Band, Latrobe Federal Band, North-West Pops Orchestra, Burnie All Stars Dance Band and Armidale City Band.

As well as conducting, Cathy has been coaching private music students for over twenty years, with those students gaining Credit or higher in their AMEB brass exams and many obtaining music scholarships to selective schools.Cathy enjoys working with young people and has a passion for fostering the delights of brass band music and its culture in our local communities.

We are very fortunate to have a Musical Director of Cathy's ability to guide the development of Sunnybank Brass' developing musicians and lay a foundation for future.
