In 2018, Sunnybank Brass were thrilled to accept an invitation to participate in the 29th Shanghai Tourism Festival, an amazing opportunity for the band to showcase their talents on an international platform to an attracted audience of 300,000 Shanghai locals and to a television audience of over 200 million across China!
The Shanghai Tourism Festival is a large scale tourism-celebrating event, which is jointly hosted by the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Tourism, the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture, Radio, Film & TV and the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce.
Embarking on an exciting and fulfilling journey, the highlight of the tour was the Grand Opening Parade (along Huaihai Road, Shanghai) that involved 3 display routines and 2km of marching Sunnybank Brass spent over 6 months rehearsing and memorising music and moves for the display routines that proved to be popular amongst the Chinese audience.
Sunnybank Brass' participation, along with many other international acts from around the globe, was an incredible cultural experience and an amazing spectacle to be involved in. During the tour, other performances included concerts at the famous Oriental Pearl TV Tower and the Global Harbour Shopping Mall, before completing the visit with a selection of cultural experiences and visits to several places of interest in Shanghai, and Beijing.
A week after returning to Australia following this successful trip, Sunnybank Brass competed at the 2018 QLD State Band Championships, winning the B Grade Champions title and the B Grade Street March (incl. Most Entertaining Evolution). A very remarkable feat given that over 90% of the band had been struck down with what they had dubbed 'the China Flu'. As the saying goes: 'the show must go on!'
2018 certainly was a stellar year for Sunnybank Brass!
